How to Choose the Right Size Gun Safe (Without Running Out of Space)

Posted by Fortiva Safe Team on

Ask any experienced gun owner for one piece of safe advice and you will probably hear: buy bigger than you think you need. Collections grow, scopes get larger, and safes end up storing far more than firearms. This guide gives you a simple, practical method to choose the right size, without overspending on a safe that will not fit your room.

Step 1: List what you will store, not just your guns

Start with an honest inventory:

  • Long guns, noting which ones have scopes, bipods or wide stocks
  • Handguns and magazines
  • Ammunition (it takes more room than most people expect)
  • Documents, cash, jewelry, hard drives and other valuables
  • Optics, range bags, knives and accessories

Then apply the growth rule: add about 50 percent to your current long gun count. If you own 20 long guns today, shop for a safe that comfortably fits 30.

Step 2: Do not trust the gun count alone

A "40-gun" safe rarely holds 40 real-world firearms. Manufacturer counts assume slim, unscoped long guns packed tightly with shelves removed. Expect roughly 50 to 70 percent of the advertised number once you add scoped rifles and keep a shelf for handguns and ammo. We go deeper in How Many Guns Really Fit in a "50-Gun" Safe?

Instead, compare these three numbers on every product page:

  • Interior height: most long guns need at least 50 inches of clear height. Taller interiors let you add a top shelf above your rifles.
  • Interior depth: scoped rifles need depth. Around 17 inches or more is comfortable for most scoped hunting rifles.
  • Interior volume (cubic feet): the best single number for comparing real storage space.

Step 3: Measure your room and your path

  • Floor space: exterior width and depth, plus about 1.5 to 2 inches for the handle and hinges.
  • Ceiling height: a 72-inch safe needs room above it to tilt during installation. In basements, 59 to 60-inch safes are often easier.
  • Door swing: the safe door needs space to open fully. Check that it will not hit a wall or furniture.
  • Delivery path: doorways, hallways, turns and stairs between the curb and the final location. See Gun Safe Weight and Delivery.

Step 4: Match your needs to a size class

Mid-size: 25 to 35 long guns

A great starting point for a growing collection, still small enough for many bedrooms and offices.

  • Winchester Outrider 25: up to 35 long guns, 14.67 cu. ft. interior, 60-minute fire rating (Winchester), UL Listed SecuRam electronic lock, retractable Utility Shelf, Midnight Blue finish.
  • Winchester Ranger 26: 35 long guns plus 6 handguns, UL RSC burglary rating, 60-minute fire rating (Winchester), retractable Utility Shelf.

Full-size: 40 to 55 long guns (the sweet spot)

For most owners, this is the size that will not be outgrown. These safes are 72 inches tall, which leaves room for a full shelf above the long guns.

  • Winchester Ranger 44 Stealth and Ranger 44 Two Tone: up to 55 long guns, 26.28 cu. ft. interior, UL RSC, sixteen 1-inch locking bolts, 60-minute fire rating (Winchester), retractable Utility Shelf, LED lights and power outlets.
  • Winchester Outrider 41: up to 48 long guns with an unusually deep 23-inch interior (32.26 cu. ft.), ideal for scoped rifles and bulky gear.
  • Winchester Big Daddy: up to 46 long guns in a 59-inch-tall body, with an 11-gauge steel body and door, UL RSC and a 90-minute fire rating (Winchester). A strong pick for basements.

Large: 60+ long guns

For serious collections, or owners who also store a lot of gear. See our full comparison: Best Large Gun Safes for 60+ Long Guns. Top picks include the Ranger 66, the Big Daddy XLT2 and the Legacy 62.

Quick sizing table

Your long guns today Shop for (with growth) Suggested models

Do not forget fire protection

Size is only half the decision. A larger safe often stores more valuables, so it deserves a stronger fire rating. Read Gun Safe Fire Ratings Explained before you decide.
