A gun safe is one of the heaviest things you will ever bring into your home. Knowing what to expect on delivery day, and planning the move ahead of time, makes the difference between a smooth installation and a stressful afternoon. This guide covers typical safe weights, how freight delivery works, and how to get your safe from the curb to its final spot.
How much does a gun safe weigh?
Weight depends mostly on steel thickness and the amount of fireboard inside. Here are real empty weights from safes we carry:
| Safe | Size class | Empty weight |
|---|---|---|
| Winchester Bandit 19 | Mid-size, 45-min fire | 388 lbs |
| Sports Afield Preserve SA7240P | Large, 45-min fire | 653 lbs |
| Remington Big Green 52 | Large, 90-min fire | 861 lbs |
| Winchester Ranger 44 | Full-size, 60-min fire | 886 lbs |
| Winchester Big Daddy | Full-size, 90-min fire, 11-gauge | 956 lbs |
| Winchester Legacy 62 | Large, 2.5-hour fire, 10-gauge | 1,828 lbs |
Heavier is not a bad thing. Weight usually reflects thicker steel and more fire insulation, and a heavier safe is much harder to carry away. It simply means delivery needs planning.
How gun safe delivery works
Because of their size and weight, gun safes ship by freight carrier on a pallet, not by regular parcel services. At Fortiva Safe, shipping is free to the contiguous U.S., and orders ship directly from the manufacturer or its U.S. distributor.
What "curbside delivery" means
Our standard delivery is curbside. The carrier brings the safe to the curb or the end of your driveway, typically using a truck with a liftgate. The driver is not responsible for moving the safe into your home, up steps or into the final room. Moving and installation are not included.
The carrier usually contacts you to schedule the delivery window. Make sure someone is available, and inspect the packaging before signing. See our Shipping Policy for timing and details.
Getting the safe inside: your three options
- Hire a local safe mover (recommended for large safes). Professional safe movers have stair-climbing dollies, ramps and floor protection, and are usually insured. For anything over about 600 pounds, or any delivery involving stairs, this is the safest choice.
- Hire a general moving company. Some movers handle safes. Ask specifically about their experience and equipment for heavy safes.
- Do it yourself (smaller safes only). With a heavy-duty appliance dolly rated well above the safe's weight and several strong helpers, mid-size safes can be moved on flat ground. Never try to carry a safe up or down stairs without proper equipment.
Plan the path before you order
- Measure every doorway on the path. Compare the narrowest opening with the safe's width and depth, including the handle (usually about 1.5 to 2 inches).
- Check turns and hallways. A long safe may not turn into a narrow hallway even if it fits through the door.
- Count the steps. Even two or three porch steps are a challenge with a 900-pound safe.
- Check ceiling height where the safe will stand. Tall safes are often tilted on a dolly, which needs extra clearance.
- Consider the floor. A concrete slab or basement floor is ideal. For upper floors, especially with very heavy safes, get advice from a contractor about load.
Choosing the best location
- Ground floor or basement on concrete: easiest to install, and typically the most protected spot in a fire.
- Against an exterior or concrete wall: limits pry access from the sides.
- Away from water risk if you are in a flood-prone basement, or choose a model with manufacturer-rated water protection such as the Remington Big Green or the Sports Afield Haven and Preserve series.
- Near an outlet if your safe has a power docking system, LED lighting or a dehumidifier.
Always bolt your safe down
Anchoring is the single most effective upgrade after delivery. It keeps thieves from tipping the safe to attack the door or carrying it away, and some manufacturer warranties require it. For example, the Remington Big Green warranty states that the safe must be properly bolted down. Most of our safes come pre-drilled for floor anchoring, and many include a bolt-down kit.
Delivery-friendly picks
- Easiest to move: the Winchester Bandit 19 (388 lbs, 28 inches wide) fits most homes without special equipment.
- Best for basements: the 59-inch-tall Winchester Big Daddy offers 90-minute fire protection and 11-gauge steel in a shorter body that is easier to tilt and move.
- Best overall capacity: the Winchester Ranger 44, up to 55 long guns in a 42-inch-wide body.
